Rule #1 – Talk Straight
Tell the whole truth and understand that omission is a lie. Use simple language and demonstrate integrity. Don’t manipulate people or distort the facts. Be open and authentic. Get real and genuine with people. Don’t have hidden agendas or hide facts because people always find out.
Rule #2 – Demonstrate Respect
Genuinely care for others – never fake it. Respect the dignity of every person and every role. Treat everyone with respect, especially those who can’t do anything for you – for that is the true measure of your care for others.
Rule #3 – Right Wrongs
Apologise quickly when things are wrong. Don’t cover up or let pride and ego get in the way of doing the right thing.
Rule #4 – Show Loyalty
Don’t bad mouth others, disclose personal information or talk behind people’s backs. Represent others that aren’t there to speak for themselves. Always speak about people as if they are present. Acknowledge the contributions of others and give credit freely.
Rule #5 – Deliver Results
If you want trust then establish a track record of results. Make things happen. Don’t make excuses for not delivering – accomplish what you’re paid to do.
Rule #6 – Get better at the things you do
Be a constant learner and act on the feedback you receive. Thank people for their feedback and work to continuously improve.
Rule #7 – Confront Reality
Don’t bury your head in the sand – address the tough stuff directly. Take ownership of your actions and performance and acknowledge the truth about yourself.
Rule #8 – Clarify Expectations
Don’t assume your expectations are clear or shared unless you have discussed, validated or renegotiated them.
Rule #9 – Be Accountable
Hold yourself and others accountable. Don’t blame others, always look to a solution and take ownership for outcomes. Take on responsibility and follow through with what you said you would do.
Rule #10 – Listen First
Listen with your ears, eyes and heart before you speak. Ask questions to understand and don’t assume you know what matters most.
Rule #11 – Keep Commitments
Make commitments carefully and do what you said you’re going to do. Don’t commit just to make someone happy when you know you will break that pledge. Make keeping commitments the symbol of your integrity and honour.
Rule #12 – Extend Trust
Learn how to appropriately extend trust based on the person’s intent, integrity, capabilities and track record. Then extend that trust abundantly. Extend trust conditionally to those who are earning your trust.
